Unlike many ill-fated Star Wars films, Shawn Levy's Starfighter has begun production, starring Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth.
Shawn Levy's Star Wars feature film Starfighter has officially begun production, as confirmed by an announcement from Lucasfilm. The studio also confirmed a full cast, with a number of names joining the already-confirmed Ryan Gosling. The stars include Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
The standalone adventure is an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars, but not much else is known about the plot beyond that. Starfighter will be released in cinemas on May 28, 2027, and we'd expect to see some LEGO Star Wars sets tied to the release and beyond.
“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honour as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” said filmmaker Shawn Levy. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally.
"Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
Many other Star Wars titles have died quiet deaths, never making it to production, while TV shows like The Acolyte failed to get picked up for a second season. One of the only majorly successful Star Wars titles in recent years was Andor, a show with success that didn't translate into the number of LEGO sets that fans were hoping for.
Directed by Shawn Levy, Starfighter is produced by Levy and Kathleen Kennedy and written by Jonathan Tropper.
