The Goonies sequel could be great news for LEGO Ideas set

A sequel to The Goonies is officially in the works, and if the LEGO Group plays their cards right it would be perfect for an upcoming Ideas set.

Deadline reports that Potsy Ponciroli has been hired to write a sequel to the classic 1985 The Goonies movie, timing well with the 40th anniversary of the film in 2025. It's a surprising announcement considering the standalone story of the original film and the fact that the original cast is certainly too old to be coming back as their respective characters without a matching time jump.

Logistics aside – a sequel to The Goonies is on the way and this is an ideal opportunity for the LEGO Group. As part of the original '80s challenge on LEGO Ideas, The Goonies is getting a major LEGO model at some point in the future, inspired by Delusion Brick's winning build.

Should the LEGO Group keep the LEGO Ideas set – which will almost certainly land on shelves before the sequel – in production long enough, they may be able to capitalise on the sequel's release. Otherwise, The Goonies' popularity could peak even higher than it has previously in anticipation of the sequel, affecting sales of the model too.

There's no confirmed release date for The Goonies LEGO Ideas set at the time of writing, though a launch before the sequel seems all but assured. The only LEGO The Goonies representation currently available is from the retired LEGO Dimensions level pack, including a Sloth minifigure.
