Unreleased LEGO Castle video game sells on eBay for $950

A Nintendo DS prototype cartridge for an unreleased LEGO Castle video game has sold on eBay at a high price, even by modern gaming standards.

There have been dozens of LEGO games over the years, ranging across the good, the bad, and the just plain weird. Not every game made it through to a playable market, however, and one cartridge has surfaced from the unreleased LEGO Castle game, potentially thought to have been planned for a 2009 release as part of TT Games' LEGO Battles.

The cartridge went up for sale on eBay accepting bids from $950 and has now appeared to have sold. It did have a 'Buy now' option on the listing, so it could have gone for under that, although likely roughly in that ballpark.

What can be seen of the game shows LEGO Castle branding, along with an array of minifigure-style characters. From the 'Story Setup' page, it seems that the goal of the game is to defend your outpost from attack, although there's no indication of whether building fed into the gameplay in any way.

Early sketches of the LEGO Castle game outlined a plot beginning with a skeleton riding a dragon and attacking a castle with fire that could turn bricks into wireframes. The player teamed up with a wizard and his apprentice, who knew if the dragon could be ridden by a LEGO knight its powers can be used for good. You'd then need to knock the skeleton off the dragon, present it to the king, and gain knighthood. This would allow you to use the dragon to free more outposts.

Without any knowledge of who bought the game, it's hard to know if we'll ever see anything more of LEGO Castle than the pictures above. If someone interested in preserving it bought it, it could still be formatted and uploaded for people to see online.
