What is The Legend of Zelda and why does it have a LEGO set?

The LEGO Group has revealed 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 based on The Legend of Zelda but what is the series and why does it have a set?

While it's not quite as niche as the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn, The Legend of Zelda may be an unfamiliar franchise for many, but the LEGO Group has chosen to represent the franchise as the third result of its partnership with Nintendo.

It follows the likes of LEGO Super Mario and LEGO Animal Crossing but while those two received full themes, 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is a one-off model – at least at the time of writing. The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo's most recognisable franchises but while you may have heard of it, there might still be some confusion regarding the LEGO Group's choice for the next Nintendo set.

The Legend of Zelda is a long-running game series with 20 games and nine remakes at the time of writing that started in 1986 and most recently saw the addition of Tears of the Kingdom in 2023.

The series features three main characters – Link, Zelda and Ganondorf whose incarnations appear in the vast majority of the games and the story usually sees Link needing to save Zelda, the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia, and defeat Ganondorf with a legendary weapon known as the Master Sword. Hyrule is where the series takes place.

The series also includes 17 spin-off games, board games, a cartoon series and an upcoming live-action movie. Suffice it to say, it's a popular gaming franchise. 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 specifically focuses on Breath of the Wild as its main build and Ocarina of Time as an alternate model. These both depict the Deku Tree as it appears in each game.

The Deku Tree's role in each game varies but in Ocarina of Time, they serve as a guardian of the forest and protect a crucial item that Link must collect to find the Master Sword. In Breath of the Wild, the Deku Tree protects the Master Sword itself after Hyrule falls to the Calamity – a near-apocalyptic event.

The Deku Tree's appearance in both games differs greatly, reflecting an improvement in graphics but Ocarina of Time has received a remake, of which you can take a look at the trailer below for some context. Breath of the Wild's trailer is provided too but that title is easier to purchase and play on Nintendo Switch now.

Breath of the Wild has sold 31.85 million units to date, as officially confirmed by Nintendo and Ocarina of Time has reportedly sold seven million copies to date. Horizon: Zero Dawn, which has also received a LEGO set in the form of 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck has sold 20 million copies officially in comparison. The data certainly suggests that the LEGO Group has enough reason to make a The Legend of Zelda model.
