What we need in teased LEGO Mario Kart Luigi set

What we need in teased LEGO Mario Kart Luigi set

A teaser for a LEGO Mario Kart Luigi set, to scale with 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, has inspired a hopeful list of features we'd love to see.

Earlier this week, the LEGO Group shared a teaser for the next big Mario Kart model, depicting Luigi in the Mach 8 kart. We didn't quite get a full look at the build, but it was enough tell that it includes the character and this specific kart. For context, the Carrera RC toy of Luigi in the Mach 8 is pictured below.

While we wait to find out (and see) more regarding the Luigi build, we're left to speculate on what a LEGO Mach 8 can include. Here are a few features we'd love to see in the second massive LEGO Mario Kart model.

Folding wheels for anti-gravity racing

Anti-gravity is a feature introduced in Mario Kart 8, where the wheels of each kart or bike would fold up into a hover mode as the vehicle lights up with blue lights. They then would be able to drive upside-down and on walls. Mario Kart 8 just so happens to be the game that inspired the standard kart design in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, and debuted the Mach 8.

While folding wheels would have presented a major technical challenge to include in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, given the tighter design of the standard kart, the Luigi set offers the design team a second chance to replicate the feature. The more open nature of the Mach 8 means that when the kart's wheels fold down, they extend outwards slightly and turn. In theory, this would be much easier to achieve in a giant LEGO Mach 8.

By increasing the exposure and brightness of the teaser image, a portion of a Technic frame can be spotted, and we know that the wheels of the LEGO Mach 8 can be angled slightly in the other direction. While nothing has been confirmed, folding wheels for an anti-gravity reference would pair well with the next item on our wishlist.

A matching display stand

One of the best features in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart is the dynamic display stand, which can be angled to display Mario in the kart better. It seems likely that the upcoming Luigi model will have a matching stand to match. Such a build would also offer clearance between the wheels and ground to more easily fold up the wheels.

Another scaled LEGO Insiders reward

When it was launched, 72037 Mario & Standard Kart was accompanied by the LEGO Insiders-exclusive 40787 Spiny Shell reward, recreating the iconic Mario Kart item. Another scaled item model would be a similarly good accompaniment to the LEGO Luigi set, and there's only one item that would pair perfectly with the Spiny Shell. The Super Horn is the one item which can destroy the Spiny Shell and its simple design would lend itself nicely to a simple, but enticing LEGO Insiders reward.

A second pair of eye prints

Mario Kart Luigi featured

The LEGO Group's specific selection of Luigi in the Mach 8, whether intentional or not, aligns with the Luigi death stare meme, and the LEGO Super Mario design team can go one step further to referencing the meme with a small change compared to 72037 Mario & Standard Kart.

Mario's eyes in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart are recreated with printed tiles, and it seems likely that Luigi will follow suit. That set depicts Mario looking straight ahead, as he naturally would when driving. Luigi, on the other hand, would benefit from having printed tiles for his eyes looking straight ahead, and to his left for the intimidating stare.

All of the above is only speculation based on the initial teaser, and we hopefully don't have too long left to wait until we find out more about the upcoming massive Super Mario model.
