LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan Scott has answered everyone's number one question: where's the light brick in
21357 Luxo Jr. looks like a lamp, twists like a lamp – but doesn't light up like a lamp. Instead, the 'bulb' is coloured orange, rather than including a light brick, which is pretty much the only note of criticism from the LEGO fan community. In a roundtable with LEGO fan media, LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan Scott laid out the reasons why the light brick wasn't included – but was certainly considered.
"We explored it," confirmed Jordan. "As you all know, our light bricks are not that strong. They do not emit a lot of light, so putting one in here only created a small light. It doesn't function like a lamp.
"The whole point of the set wasn't to make a lamp – it was to make the Luxo J, which is a character primarily," he added. "We really wanted to have that as the priority with the movement, the articulation, the fun nature, and the animation of it.

"That's why we added the colour being this nice, fresh yellow because, if we had done transparent or white, it wouldn't, it just would have gotten lost. When you have that reflection of light inside, it does give off this feeling of illumination."
It's not just about the set itself, either – although those practical considerations are the priority. Jordan also noted that LEGO sets with light bricks need to have a large warning label on the box, which ruins the look for fans who like to collect the boxes.
"That wasn't like the driving factor of it, but we also wanted this box to look nice. That does have an impact."

Of course, there's nothing stopping anyone from trying to add other light sources to the set. The joy of LEGO is making it your own and Jordan himself is excited to see what people can do with 21357 Luxo Jr.
"If people want to try and light it up with other options, that's for them to figure out," the LEGO Ideas Design Manager said. "If someone can fit an actual light bulb in this, I would be incredibly impressed – but I never underestimate the creativity of our fans and their ability to do such things."
