The professional LEGO designer behind 21365 Love Birds explained what sparked the changes in the latest LEGO Ideas set.
It's standard practice for fan-designed LEGO Ideas projects to go through some changes, and 21365 Love Birds is no different. We compared the fan design from Micah (aka ModularManiac on the Ideas platform) to the final product here, but now, thanks to an interview from the LEGO Ideas team, we've got more insight into why those changes were made.
"Micah's model was a beautiful and technically advanced build and an appealing display," said LEGO Model Designer David Guedes. "But to make it a little bit more accessible for all adult builders, we simplified parts of the model, whilst staying true to the original shape and angle of the trees, the voluminous foliage and the twisting bark."
That comment on simplifying the build seems to suggest that 21365 Love Birds is one of a growing number of sets that are geared towards newcomers to LEGO, much like LEGO Botanicals and other display-focused models.
Extra depth was also added to the birds themselves, thanks to the addition of a new colour that Micah wouldn't even have known existed. This new shade of pink appeared in another January release, 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape.
"We also added in a few bricks that were part of our newest addition to the LEGO colour palette - warm pink!" explained David. "The birds in Micah's model had more vibrant coral, so we kept that, but mixed in a colour he didn't even know about yet!"
21365 Love Birds is available to buy right now for £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99, well before a Valentine's Day date.
