Comparing LEGO Harry Potter Hogsmeade Village to Diagon Alley

LEGO Harry Potter 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition is both a companion and a replacement to 75978 Diagon Alley, so how do the two compare?

Due for release on September 1, the newly revealed 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition will hit shelves three months before 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition officially retires. While the two sets, both depicting major wizarding streets, can be displayed together in one (very long) row, they also stand almost in opposition to one another, both being large display models of various shops and businesses at minifigure scale.

With that in mind, we've broken down a comparison of the two sets, 2020's 75978 Diagon Alley and 2025's 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition, below.

75978 versus 76457 in numbers

Looking at the numbers on the face of it, 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition appears to suffer from the price increases being felt across multiple licensed themes (just look at the response to the August LEGO Star Wars wave, as one example). The price per piece ratio is higher for the 2025 set and, while that's not always a perfect measure, it does still feel like a high price tag for what you get.

Admittedly, the £389.99 price was back in 2020. That amount of money in 2020, adjusted for inflation, would be worth £489.27 today in the UK, so you'd expect some price fluctuations to be taken into account. The piece count may be smaller in 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition, but you get five buildings instead of four. In addition, there are 326 pieces for every minifigure in 75978 Diagon Alley, as opposed to 269 pieces per minifigure in 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition, indicating a higher density of characters for the size.

Moving beyond the statistics and digging into the content of the sets, you do technically get more buildings for your money in 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition. The modern building techniques clearly show the difference five years can make, with twisting chimneys and quirky details bringing the buildings to life in the 2025 set.

Looking past the facades into the interiors, however, and 75978 Diagon Alley comes into its own. Every section includes furniture that makes sense for the location, even pulling out scenes from the movies, like the upper balcony in Flourish and Blotts that the Malfoys make their dramatic entrance, or an attic packed with Quidditch supplies.

By contrast, some of the rooms inside 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition are largely empty or without unique accessories, especially in the many nooks and crannies of The Three Broomsticks. Zonko's is admittedly colourful and packed with references, but there's little to mark the upper rooms of The Hog's Head or The Three Broomsticks as unique.

This is perhaps where the lower piece count falls down, but for a Collectors' Edition set with such a high price tag, you'd expect more storytelling opportunities within. It's hard to say for sure from just the images, but the initial photos make 75978 Diagon Alley look a lot more fleshed out than 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition.

The wider trend of licensed sets

Putting 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition into context with some other licensed releases in 2025, the numbers still don't weigh in its favour. The price per piece is still much higher than some others, even minifigure-scale display models that are fairly comparable, such as LEGO DC 76300 Arkham Asylum and LEGO One Piece 75640 The Baratie Floating Restaurant.

While it's no secret that prices are creeping up in licensed LEGO themes, 76457 Hogsmeade Village Collectors' Edition does feel a lot more expensive for what you get – especially when the design itself has the drawbacks that we mentioned above. When comparing it to both its spiritual predecessor, 75978 Diagon Alley, and similar releases from other themes, it's tough to see what that cost is really getting you.
