The new style of packaging for LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2 has led to carnage in stores across the opening weekend.
The latest range of LEGO Marvel Collectible Minifigures was released on September 1, marking the debut of the LEGO Group's new blind packaging: cardboard boxes. While this might be better for the environment in the LEGO Group's eyes, it's made it harder to try and predict what minifigures lie inside. For LEGO Marvel fans who want every character or a specific character from 71039 Marvel Series 2, that's been a point of frustration.
Some people, however, have taken this frustration out on their fellow shoppers by ripping into the boxes while they're still on shelves and leaving behind discarded boxes. In some cases, minifigures are even being stolen out of the boxes, with only packaging left behind. We'd seen examples of this happening in UK stores that had 71039 Marvel Series 2 on shelves ahead of September 1, it's been continuing in shops throughout opening weekend, according to people sharing images on Reddit.
Reddit user u/NearlyHeadless-Brick wrote: "Of course the one time I actually find new CMF figures in Walmart, they were already opened and vandalized. Pieces were laying everywhere, while u/GetOffMyUnicorn70 described their find as "infuriating".
While LEGO Store employees had plans ahead of release to manage the demand for specific minifigures, it's possible that other non-LEGO stores (where it appears the pictures shown above were taken) either weren't aware of or didn't plan for the eventuality of shoppers actually ripping into LEGO packaging before or without buying them.
The vast majority of Reddit users in the comments agree that this behaviour is unnecessary and inconsiderate, others raise that it's actually the LEGO Group's fault for switching to truly blind packaging, with one person writing: "LEGO has this coming. The blind packaging is straight b******t." While there are ways to try and predict which character is in each pack, it's certainly not an exact science. Still, in our book, being frustrated over not finding the minifigure you want is no reason to damage packs that other LEGO fans might want.
