The LEGO Group's next fan-designed LEGO Ideas set, 21360 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, has some weird movie inspiration.
LEGO Ideas 21360 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, due for release on September 15 for the price of £119.99 / $219.99 / €219.99, is based on the 1971 film of the same name. However, the LEGO designers would have had plenty of choice for inspiration fodder, starting with the 1964 book, the 2005 movie starring Johnny Depp, and even the 2023 Wonka prequel if the LEGO Group wanted to dip into the chocolate maker's past.
In fact, Brick Fanatics' Matthew can see the influence of the different films on different elements of the set, even though the main focus is clearly Gene Wilder's Wonka and his movie. Once you start digging into the history and context of 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, it reveals a fascinating picture of the cinematic hopes and dreams of one oat snack company. Yes, you read that right – Wonka's start in film came about thanks to Quaker Oats.
