LEGO reveals Smart Play system at CES 2026

The LEGO Group is revealing a whole new way to play with technology-infused bricks right now at CES 2026, featuring some Star Wars news.

The LEGO Group's press conference at CES 2026 is now underway, and media in attendance are sharing more details of a major reveal for the company. The LEGO Group has revealed Smart Play at the event. Engadget's live blog has shared more details, including what Smart Play is and how it works.

Smart Play is the latest innovation from the LEGO Group, which will see a series of new tech-infused elements interact with one another and normal LEGO elements to bring them to life. Examples shown at the event at the time of writing include a car screeching as it turns, minifigures making noise when being hit, and being able to see which of two LEGO vehicles crosses a finish line first.

The electronic elements named include a special kind of minifigure, a unique 2x4 brick and some kind of tile or tag. While more details have yet to be confirmed, it's a promising concept, and a theme to feature Smart Play has been confirmed. LEGO Star Wars has three new sets that will feature Smart Play, with interactivity ranging from playing the Imperial March to knowing where the other models with smart bricks inside are.

Further details on these three new LEGO Star Wars sets have yet to be revealed, but it will be interesting to see just how the Smart Play system works in the context of the theme.
