LEGO Star Wars Chopper design required some ‘tricky solutions’

Some creative solutions were required when it came time for the LEGO Star Wars design team to work on the upcoming 75416 Chopper (C1-10P).

A total of nine new LEGO Star Wars sets were revealed yesterday, all of which will be available to purchase from May 1, 2025. Included in that line up is 75416 Chopper (C1-10P), a 1,039-piece build of the cantankerous droid from the Star Wars: Rebels and Ahsoka TV shows.

Standing over 22cm tall, 75416 Chopper (C1-10P) represents the first-ever large-scale version of the astromech to date, one that wasn’t without a few creative challenges. LEGO Star Wars designer Jme Wheeler has been discussing the set over on the official Star Wars site, revealing just what went into bringing the mischievous droid to life.

"After the release of the most recent R2-D2 model, there was a lot of desire from the fan community for a scale version of Chopper,” said Jme. “Given the combination of functionality and mobility, there were several sections of the build that required some tricky solutions”

Unlike 75379 R2-D2, 75416 Chopper (C1-10P) replicates the droid’s signature wobbling head and flailing arms, functions that required the LEGO Star Wars design team to come up with some clever solutions.

“It is such a recognisable part of Chopper’s character, so I went through many iterations of the function trying to get it just right,” explained Jme. “Part of the challenge was that because his head needs to sit flat while resting, that meant it couldn't just rock left and right but also had to move up and down in the same motion.”

The LEGO Star Wars designer also noted that 75416 Chopper (C1-10P) includes a few sneaky Rebellion secrets tucked away within the droid’s innards that are only likely to be revealed once the model is assembled.

“There are one or two nods to his Star Wars: Rebels appearance hidden inside the build for fans to find,” hinted Jme.

75416 Chopper (C1-10P) will be released on May 1, 2025, with the LEGO Star Wars set priced at  £94.99 / $99.99 / €109.99.
