LEGO Star Wars designer reveals all but one of K-2SO's secrets

LEGO Star Wars Senior Designer Peter Carmichael appeared at Star Wars Celebration Japan to dish on all but one of 75434 K-2SO's secrets.

Star Wars Celebration was the site of the official reveal of LEGO Star Wars 75434 K-2SO on Friday, offering not just photos but the first in-hand look at the upcoming Star Wars set. Plus, Jay's Brick Blog had the chance to speak to LEGO Star Wars Senior Designer Peter Carmichael at the event, discussing some of the biggest challenges and achievements from his work on 75434 K-2SO.

Peter also took to Instagram to highlight that this is his very first LEGO set since starting with the LEGO Group, thanking his wife for supporting the move to Billund and writing: "The day is finally here, where I can show you all what I have been working on in Billund. So blessed to be working at a dream job where I get to make amazing things."

Speaking to Jay, Peter highlighted that K-2SO's towering height required a lot of different prototype versions.

"The biggest challenge throughout this whole process was making the legs strong and sturdy enough to support all the weight because the majority of his weight is up high," he said. "I probably made 20 different versions of the legs. I had to try new things one after another until I found something that supported it and didn't let him lean forward and fall over."

Peter also pointed out that the flywheel has a new colour change, coming in yellow for the first time. It's actually used three times in the set, twice around the arms in yellow and once around the neck in typical black.

Last but not least, Peter pointed out the building techniques used within the chest to achieve 74343 K-2SO's unique silhouette.

"There's a lot of really intricate angles to make it look like one cast piece of metal. Once you get building, you're going to see a lot of cool things in there – and one little Easter egg, which I'll let the builders discover."

To find out that final secret for yourself, LEGO Star Wars 75434 K-2SO is available to pre-order now and will ship from August 1, retailing for £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99 and including 845 pieces.
