LEGO Star Wars has a new black-haired Kanan Jarrus situation on its hands

LEGO Star Wars seems to have a new black-haired Kanan Jarrus situation on its hands, this time with Qui-Gon Jinn in 75383 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator.

Welcome to the world of LEGO Star Wars minifigure collecting, where a single tiny change to a face print can be the difference between a £20 minifigure and a £280 minifigure. So it is with 75053 The Ghost’s Kanan Jarrus: the set’s initial run gave the Jedi black hair and eyebrows, while later production runs updated his facial features and hairpiece to dark brown to better reflect the animated series.

That black-haired version of Kanan Jarrus will now set you back an average of £279 new on BrickLink, while you can grab the much more common brown-haired variant for only £20 new on average. The black hairpiece has popped up enough elsewhere that even that’s pretty cheap by itself, which means it’s really only the change in print colour on Kanan’s head that’s driving that steep, steep price difference.

For the right collector, though, black-haired Kanan is a prize to covet and treasure. The same may soon be said of Qui-Gon Jinn, as it appears last year’s 75383 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator has repeated the same pattern of 75053 The Ghost (only this time without the excuse of trying to accurately match a brand new series). The earliest runs of the 25th-anniversary set apparently included Qui-Gon with a reddish brown beard, while later runs corrected that to dark brown.

There are two separate listings for Qui-Gon Jinn minifigures in 75383 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator on BrickLink as a result, though all examples of the rarer reddish brown variant have been snapped up already, presumably by collectors hoping for a repeat of Kanan Jarrus’s aftermarket performance. The 19 minifigures sold in January and February have ranged in price from £10.95 up to £41.68.

Qui-Gon Jinn with dark brown hair and beard can be had for as little as £6.30, meanwhile, or £11.33 on average. The same minifigure sans poncho appeared in a recent issue of the LEGO Star Wars magazine, and as you’d imagine is currently pretty plentiful in Europe.

It's worth noting that at this stage it's not clear how many production runs with the reddish-brown version of Qui-Gon made it into the wild, so the actual rarity of this minifigure compared to the black-haired Kanan Jarrus remains to be seen. But if you want a truly complete LEGO Star Wars minifigure collection, you’re probably going to have to hunt down the reddish brown variant of the esteemed Jedi Master either way.
